Checklist for Moving
Three Weeks before Moving
- Tour your house and decide which items may be discarded, donated or sold at a garage/yard sale.
- Arrange for school records to be transferred.
- Begin using perishable food items since they cannot be transported.
- Use flammable items or give them away before you move. They cannot be transported.
Two Weeks before Moving
Address Change
- Post Office; give forwarding address.
- Charge accounts, credit cards.
- Subscriptions; notice requires several weeks.
- Friends and relatives.
Financial Institution
- Transfer funds; arrange check cashing in the new city.
- Arrange credit references.
Insurance
- Notify company of new location for coverage; life, health, fire and auto.
Utility Companies
- Gas, light, water, telephone, fuel, cable, TV.
- Collect refunds on any deposits made.
Delivery Service
- Laundry, newspaper, milk; change-over of services.
Medical, Dental & Prescription History
- Ask doctor and dentist for referrals; transfer needed prescriptions, eyeglasses, x-rays. Obtain birth records, etc.
Church, Clubs & Organizations
- Transfer memberships; get letters of introduction.
Pets
- Ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags, etc.
On Moving Day
- Carry enough cash or travelers checks to cover the cost of moving services and expenses until you can establish banking connections in a new city.
- Carry jewelry and personal documents yourself or use registered mail.
- Plan for transporting pets; they are poor traveling companions if unhappy.
- Traveler's checks provide safe, quick and available funds.
- Let close friend or relative know the route and schedule you will travel including overnight stops; use them as a message headquarters.
- Make final check of every room and storage area.
- Leave all old keys needed by new tenant or owner with REALTOR® or neighbor.
At Your New Address
- Obtain certified or cashier's check necessary for closing real estate transaction.
- Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, water and cable TV.
- Have appliances checked.
- Ask mailman for mail that he may be holding for your arrival.
- Have new address recorded on driver's license.
- Visit city offices and register to vote.
- Register car within five days of arrival in state.
- Obtain inspection sticker.
- Apply for a state driver's license.
- Register children in new school.
- Arrange for medical services.
And Don't Forget To
- Empty freezer; plan use of foods.
- Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator.
- Have appliances serviced for moving.
- Remember arrangements for TV antenna.
- Clean rugs or clothing before moving, have them moving wrapped.
- Check with your moving company regarding insurance coverage, labor, arrival day and payment.
